If you've ever felt the elation that comes from a great, soul-searching walk in the natural world, then you already know something about thinking on both feet. The idea of recording my walks actually occurred to me on just such a walk, through one of South Amherst's loveliest meadows. I discovered that the rhythm of my walk somehow gave rise to a rhythm of thinking that engaged my whole being. I found that I was thinking not just with my head, but also with my body and soul.

To date, I've recorded almost thirty of these walks. ("Walking with Thoreau"--the CD available here--was my first.) Each walk was an improvisation, a ramble. Yet each managed to find a subject and explore it--by staying on the path, and by straying off the path. Another happy surprise was that although each walk was a solitary walk, my thinking out loud was also addressed to someone--or some thing--beyond myself. And so, in listening, you'll feel that you are companionably there, with me, on the walk.

Whether you choose to listen on a walk of your own, in the car, or at home, Thinking On Both Feet should prove to be an adventure of the mind, body, and spirit. An intimate dialogue, though only one voice is speaking.
